How Large Is Too Large?
If the hole is larger than the patch can overlap by at least one inch on every side, use a larger wall patch or a drywall insert. For very large damage, cutting a clean square and adding backing may produce a better repair.
| Hole size | Best repair | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Under 2 inches | Small mesh patch or compound | Enough surface area for a simple repair. |
| 2 to 6 inches | Large drywall patch kit | Mesh or reinforced patch supports the compound. |
| Over 6 inches | Drywall insert | A new drywall piece is usually stronger and flatter. |
Best Large-Hole Kit Features
Look for a patch larger than the damage, strong adhesive, joint compound, wide putty knife, sanding sponge, and instructions for feathering multiple coats.
